Frequently asked questions

Whilst many video sites have a lot of educational content, there are significant drawbacks to using them as a replacement for private tuition. There are no checks regarding the quality of its content, there is no work which is integrated to the video, the content can be years out of date and the creators are paid a fraction of a pence per view which does not incentivise small-scale tutors to create and maintain their library of lessons. Plus, by using MVT you have the option to pay a small fee to have your work marked by the creator of the video!

MyVideoTutor has automatic reporting functionalities which allow parents to track their child’s learning and interaction with the site. If you choose to set up a linked account you can see information regarding the number of videos watched, topics covered and workbooks completed. Plus, you can have this information sent to you on a weekly basis at no extra cost.

The lessons on MyVideoTutor vary in cost because tutors set their own prices. Most are typically in the £2 to £5 range, but some are lower or higher. Marking is usually a similar charge. Often, you can get a lesson and marking for around £5, which is up to 90% less than the cost of a typical private tutoring lesson!

You fund an account using a credit or debit card. All payments are handled by Paypal and fully secure using industry-standard encryption.

Here at MVT we take child protection and safeguarding very seriously. All tutors must upload identification documents which are verified by our staff. In addition, before their videos are allowed to be viewed on the site we check to ensure their material is safe and appropriate. If at any time a tutor uploads anything which is inappropriate then they will be removed from our platform.

Our aim is to provide a platform for high quality tutors to deliver video lessons and accompanying work for the full range of GCSE subjects. However, we aim to expand into content for the 11 Plus secondary entrance exam, plus A-Level and undergraduate videos in the future.

We know that the exam board your child studies can mean a huge amount of difference between the content to be learned or the style of exam answer that a particular board wants to see. As such, all tutors must specify what exam board their lessons are directed towards and this option is searchable within the site to ensure your money is not wasted on content which is not relevant.

All of our content is made by experienced teachers and tutors. In addition, where a teacher has qualified teacher status (QTS) this will also be displayed so parents and students know who is creating their lesson content.

The videos will work across all computers and mobile devices. However, all lessons have accompanying workbook content and this content is best accessed at the same time as the video plays on a laptop or desktop computer.

Absolutely. One of the founding principles of MVT is that we are fair to our content creators and to our customers. Paying for a video and the accompanying workbook once allows you to rewatch it limitless times on your account, saving or editing the accompanying work which will remain fully accessible.

We recommend using a piece of screen capture software called Open Broadcast Software (OBS) which is available from obsproject.com. This will allow you to capture your screen whilst presenting Powerpoint presentations, videos, annotating documents, typing answers, going through past papers and mark schemes and anything else you wish to do whilst delivering a lesson. In addition, you will be able to capture your face simultaneously using a webcam and the program also manages the audio you are recording to explain your lesson.

In addition to Open Broadcast Software, you will need a good quality microphone and webcam. We recommend not using the microphones built into webcams as they tend to produce a lower sound quality. Spending a little money in this area if you do not already have this equipment (£50-80) will improve the quality of your lessons enormously and have a subsequent improvement on the amount of money you will earn from selling access to your videos and work.

Absolutely. We have created a guide for would-be creators on our platform to get started. Once you have a good quality microphone and camera and you have downloaded Open Broadcast Software then you can get started. Click HERE to access our guide to making content for MVT.

You will need to upload a copy of your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or PGC/PGCE.

It depends! If your content is good quality then you could earn a significant amount of money as passive income. We allow tutors to sell access to their videos/accompanying work, separate downloadable work and also to sell private one-to-one lessons. If you are a founding content creator or you upload on a regular basis then you will also have an improved payment rate.

We pay out our content creators through Paypal. We also pay all of the processing fees for you from the fee we charge, so any money in your account is money you have. This is also why we have a minimum payout amount of £10. You can keep track of how much you have earned from inside your account and request a payment any time you have above £10 of earnings.

You can create a database of your best resources to sell and you can also sell private lessons to students who enjoy your videos. For the latter, we just charge a one-off introduction fee – after that, you negotiate all lessons and payments directly with the student/their parents.

We have a url-shortening service which will enable you to share your creator page to your Twitter, Instagram or other social media pages.

Save them as separate files – that way each one will display under a separate page of the workbook.

Absolutely not! If your child is more comfortable working offline then they can use a regular notebook. Once you purchase marking you have the option of submitting the online workbooks or, using a special QR code, taking photographs of the work and uploading them directly into your MVT account for tutor marking! It’s really straightforward.
